Members of the WSU executive met with representatives of the MSA executive on January 17th, 2107. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss areas of common interest and determine whether there was benefit in sharing booths at sports shows, for example the Sports and RV show in Halifax. After some debate, it was suggested that sharing booths was not a good idea as it would likely confuse the public. However, having one another’s literature displayed at each booth would be helpful. Fundraising dinners were also discussed and the feeling was mutual that we do our own dinners but avoid timing conflicts with one another.
Another topic brought forward was the idea of having DNA testing performed on Margaree salmon to determine whether there is still evidence of the Rocky Brook strain in those fish. If so it could potentially convince the DFO to allow the introduction of fish from a river in one zone to a river in a different zone. This would not only benefit the recipient river but also the Margaree by relieving fishing pressure. MSA representatives indicated they would investigate this process.
Both executives felt this type of meeting was beneficial and should continue in the future. WSU and MSA are both interested in the welfare of Atlantic Salmon and will cooperate wherever possible to enhance its presence in our rivers.
